About 200 Seacoast residents gathered for more than three hours on Saturday morning at Portsmouth High School to share ideas for that future.

In 2008, the City Council asked the Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Committee on Sustainable Practices to develop a five-year sustainability plan for the area. In the past year, the Mayor’s Committee, Portsmouth Listens and Piscataqua Sustainability Initiative have been engaging the community to achieve that plan, including an online survey at SustainablePortsmouth.org and the community forum on Saturday.

A half-dozen members of the Islington Creek Neighborhood Association took part in the Piscataqua Sustainability Initiative’s “The Natural Step” study circles in the spring. They formed the Islington Creek Zero Waste Committee, and its first action was to try to make National Night Out on Aug. 4 a “zero waste” event.
